‘A record number of candidates’: MeckPAC prepares for historic midterm elections

In February, as filing for elected offices completed across the state, political observers noted that this year “might be first time EVER all seats are contested” in North Carolina’s legislative races.

The enthusiasm and participation in local and state elections has certainly increased over the past couple years, and MeckPAC is seeing an equally matched increase in participation in our local races right here in Mecklenburg County.

Last week, we sent out our annual candidate questionnaires to those who had filed to run for local and legislative seats in Mecklenburg County, including those running for Mecklenburg County Commission, Mecklenburg Sheriff, the county’s district attorney and Mecklenburg’s Clerk of Superior Court, as well as all of the state House and Senate districts within the county.

When all is said and done, we’ll have had touch points, questionnaire responses or interviews with more than 70 candidates running for offices inside the county.

It’s certainly an exciting time, with a record number of candidates not only running for office, but also actively seeking the endorsement of MeckPAC, your local LGBTQ advocacy organization for two decades and counting.
