MeckPAC, the Mecklenburg LGBTQ Political Action Committee, has partnered with Charlotte Pride to present the third annual LGBTQ Community Candidate Forum.
The event will be held on Monday, Aug. 21, 6-10 p.m., at the Charlotte Marriott City Center, 100 W. Trade St., during Charlotte Pride Week, in the days leading up to this year’s Charlotte Pride Festival and Parade.
The forum begins with a pre-event reception, followed by moderated conversation with at-large candidates for Charlotte City Council and candidates for mayor. Following the forum, attendees are invited to again mix and mingle with candidates for office at a post-event reception.
The moderator for the event is longtime social justice activist Mandy Carter, the former executive director and a co-founder of Southerners on New Ground. Carter will be joined by co-moderator Matt Comer, a former editor of Charlotte LGBTQ newspaper QNotes and currently a MeckPAC board member.
Topics and questions for candidates will include the recently debated LGBTQ-inclusive non-discrimination protections in Charlotte, HB2 and its aftermath including repeal efforts, extended protections for transgender citizens and other intersectional issues, including topics addressing housing, economic opportunity, police-community relations and more.
The forum is being presented in partnership with Democracy North Carolina, Equality North Carolina and the Human Rights Campaign.
